You might hear a lot of people talk about autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and automatic guided vehicles (AGVs) in the same breath, like they’re two terms for the exact same thing. But really, it’s more useful to think of AGVs as robots that follow a specific set path, and AMRs as robots that map their own path and aren’t tied down to any one predefined route. The advantage of AGVs is they are the cheapest robots, because, hey, they’re just little pushcarts that drive themselves in a circle all day. AMRs are the show ponies of the warehouse world. They can travel everywhere, but they get lost more often, and they cost twice as much. AMRs start at ₹50 lakh and run you up to ₹1 crore, but you need more?

Self-driving vehicles are fascinating, but have you heard about Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) that don’t just navigate, but see and think as they go? Phones, cameras, lidar, and software let these wheeled wonders avoid collisions and even replan their paths in mid-motion, no fixed routes or magnetic tapes needed. Cargo capability is the most influential price determinant apart from guidance. How much do you need to carry? A 0.5-ton pallet mover might cost between ₹10 lakh and ₹15 lakh, while a 2-ton tugger that tows several such dollies could range from ₹25 lakh to ₹35 lakh. Fork- or scissor-lift AGVs that elevate pallets to rack height will run from ₹30 lakh to ₹60 lakh, depending not just on the number of tons you are hoisting in the air but on the height to which you plan to lift them (table 1). As an approximate rule of thumb, fitted lithium-ion or lead-acid, your cargo-carrying machines will likely add between ₹6 lakh and ₹15 lakh in mass and cost for every 0.5 tons of lift. This cost increases when you max out the battery lifting the heavier load.

Infrastructure Layout Costs: Modifying Your Warehouse Floor for Fixed-Path Robots

The funny thing about these automated guided vehicles (AGVs) is sometimes how little guidance they need. Many newer models, automated mobile robots (AMRs), don’t rely on preinstalled guidance systems in the floor or overhead on your racking. They navigate using natural features and clue in by detecting obstacles. However, should you go the more traditional magnetic tape, QR code, or laser-mapping route, every warehouse manager knows having your AGVs keep to the straight and narrow is critical. Magnetic tape needs a clean, flat floor and readily accessible paths. “The magnetic tape itself should be under the surface of the floor, not on top where it affects how high your load sits,” says Jim Davis, application engineer for Seegrid Corp.

New vs. Refurbished Fleets: Smart Budgeting Strategies for Mid-Sized Indian Enterprises

Refurbished AGVs offer a middle path. Indian suppliers now stock second-hand units from European or Japanese facilities, priced 30 to 50 percent below new models. A refurbished laser-guided AGV that costs ₹40 lakh new might sell for ₹20 lakh to ₹25 lakh with a six-month warranty. Check battery health and motor hours before you buy. Mixing new and refurbished units in one fleet works well for phased rollouts: deploy new AGVs in high-cycle zones and refurbished units in overflow areas. Leasing is another option. Monthly lease payments run ₹60,000 to ₹1.5 lakh per AGV, covering maintenance and software updates. Over three years, leasing costs more than buying outright, but it preserves cash flow and lets you upgrade to newer tech mid-contract. For mid-sized enterprises testing automation for the first time, a two-year lease on three AGVs (total ₹43 lakh to ₹1.08 crore) proves less risky than a ₹1 crore capital purchase.
